Botox and Dysport Treatments –  Orange County

Neurotoxins such as Botox and Dysport are considered to be one of the most effective anti-aging treatments available. Both are neurotoxins that can be used to treat many concerns, ranging from frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, prominent jawline, dimply chin, gummy smile, vertical neck lines, and excessive sweating, just to name a few. It has even been shown to help with migraine headaches.

Botox and Dysport are made from neurotoxins produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When neurotoxin is injected into specific muscles, it prevents nerve transmissions from reaching the muscle receptor cells. As a result, even though your brain is telling you to move the injected muscle, you won’t be able to! With the targeted muscle now relaxed, wrinkles can no longer be created and existing deep wrinkles will smooth over time. The necessary dosage depends on the area being treated and the level of results that you wish to achieve.

Results are observed typically within 4-5 days and maintenance treatments are required every 3-4 months. Neurotoxins are considered to be one of the most effective anti-aging treatments available because it not only treats existing lines, but it also prevents new wrinkles from forming. Studies have shown that people who use neurotoxins prophylactically tend to age much slower than those who don’t.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Botox is made by Allergan and Dysport is made by Galderma. Dysport requires 3 times as much units as Botox to get the same effect, but this does not mean it isn’t as good, it’s simply how the dosing works. For example, to treat a typical frown area, it takes 20 units of Botox or 60 units of Dysport. The cost is roughly $220 for either brands and the fluid volume that is needed to deliver 20 units of Botox or 60 units of Dysport is exactly the same. Both Botox and Dysport have the same effects and longevity of results. Just like some patients prefer Advil over Tylenol, there are patients who prefer Botox over Dysport and vice versa for various reasons.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Botox and Dysport injections are for both men and women that are looking to achieve or retain their youthful appearance. The majority of patients seeking treatment are at least 30 years old or older, but patients younger than that also seek out neurotoxins as a proactive step in preventing wrinkles.

If you have excessive skin laxity, neurotoxins may not be able to produce noticeable results. If you have deep lines that are already imprinted or etched into the skin, neurotoxins will help soften those lines, not completely erase them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Liquid Beauty charges $12/unit for Botox. Dysport is $4/unit. Keep in mind that Dysport typically requires 3 times as much units as Botox to get the same effect, so the pricing for either are the same. This does not mean that one is better than the other, it's just how the dosing works for each individual product. Typical costs for crows feet is $240-$2300 frown is $120-$300, and forehead is $120-$300. The actual cost of Botox or Dysport will vary depending on your needs.

It typically will last about 3-4 months, depending on the individual. Factors that influence how long it lasts include amount of Botox used, history of Botox usage, and lifestyle factors.

Don't exercise, rub the area, go in hot tub or jaccuzi, or do anything that will increase circulation for 24 hours after getting Botox. Wash your face gently with soap and water, but don't scrub or exfoliate too hard. Avoid facials for 1 week after the procedure. Do not apply makeup for 8 hours after the procedure.

Avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil for 2 weeks prior to treatment. (Note: If your personal physician prescribed aspirin to you, do not stop aspirin without your physician's approval). Taking arnica orally for a week before and after your treatment can help minimize bruising.

Results typically take 3-4 days to show up, but sometimes it can take a full 2 weeks. It can be different every time so don't panic if you don't see it kicking in as fast as it usually does for you! Please refrain from calling us until you have given it 2 weeks. By doing a touch up too early, you run the risk of over treating the area.

The #1 area that requires fine-tuning with neurotoxin is the forehead. Why? Because everyone's forehead is different and how sensitive the forehead is to Botox varies according to the individual. In general, we cannot inject in the area close to the brows because it will cause brow ptosis. However, there are people who we can inject very close to the brows and have no issues, and others where we can stay really high and still droop their brows. The forehead is a tricky area that requires artistry, a little bit of controlled experimentation, and your honest feedback so that we can learn what injection pattern works best for you.

The forehead and frown are opposing muscles. Treating the forehead lines by itself increases the risk that the brows will get heavy or droop. Remember, neurotoxin causes muscles to relax and go in the opposite direction of the original movement. The forehead raises the brows so when neurotoxins relax it, brows go down. Your muscles pull down when you frown, so when neurotoxins relax it, it raises the brows. By doing both together, you are minimizing the risk of brow ptosis.

This involves using neurotoxin to lift the brows laterally and medially, depending on what you desire. Typical dosing for this can range from 5-40 units for Botox or 15-120 unit for Dysport.

Of course! However, please be aware that Botox and Dysport is dose dependent. Baby doses will have a softening effect only, you will still have movement and lines, and the results won't last as long. You will need a higher dose if you want a lifting effect and/or deep lines to disappear.

It is normal to have redness and bumps on the treated areas right afterwards. Don't worry, these will go away in 20 minutes.
